A True Independent watchOS App

An independent watchOS app runs on the watch, not on your phone with a display piped over. You open it from your wrist and it works. You can act, not just look.

Why that matters: it works when your phone is elsewhere. Gym, walk, kitchen, bedside at 6am. You want to start or stop a fast at the moment you eat or stop eating, and those moments often happen without your phone in hand. Complications, Explained

Apple groups complications into families. Each family is a shape that fits certain slots on certain watch faces, and developers pick which families to build. That is why an app can appear on one face and be missing from another.

Circular. The small round slots on faces like Infograph, Modular and California. They hold a tiny icon plus a ring or a very short value. This is the most common family and the one most people mean by “complication.”

Corner. The four corner positions on the Infograph face. They curve along the edge of the display and can show a gauge or compact text. Corner slots are larger than circular ones, so they read more easily at a glance.

Rectangular. The wide horizontal slot on faces such as Modular, Modular Compact and Infograph Modular. It has the most room of any family and can carry a headline plus a line or two of detail, which makes it popular for timers and progress bars.

Bezel. The ring of small text around the outer edge of the Utility and California faces, paired with one larger complication at the top. It gives you a strip of text without eating into the center of the face.

Inline. A single line of text directly above or below the time on faces like Utility. Compact, text-only, useful for a short status string.

There is also the Smart Stack, which is not a face complication at all. It is the swipeable set of widget cards you reach by turning the Digital Crown from the watch face. Cards there can be larger than any complication, and watchOS surfaces relevant ones automatically.

Practical takeaway: before committing to a face layout, check which families your fasting app ships. Support is per-family, not all-or-nothing.

On the watch face, EasyFasting ships circular and corner complications, both colored by your current fasting phase. The color maps to the six-phase model: Fed for hours zero to four, Early Fasting four to eight, Fat Mobilization eight to twelve, Metabolic Switch twelve to sixteen, Extended Fasting sixteen to twenty-four, and Deep Fast past twenty-four hours. You do not have to read anything to know roughly where you stand, which is the point of a glance. If you want the exact hour, tapping the complication opens the timer.

Being honest about the gaps: rectangular, bezel and inline complications are not shipped yet. They are planned for a later version. Setting It Up

Roughly two minutes, most of it deciding where the complication goes.

  1. Install the iPhone app first. The watch app ships alongside it, so install EasyFasting on your iPhone and open it once.
  2. Install the watch app. Open the Watch app on your iPhone, scroll to the list of available apps, and tap Install next to EasyFasting. With automatic install on, it may already be there. You can also install from the App Store on the watch itself.
  3. Open it once on the watch. Press the Digital Crown to reach your app list and tap EasyFasting. This first launch syncs your current fast and protocol.
  4. Edit your watch face. Press and hold the face until it zooms out, then tap Edit. Swipe left to the complications screen.
  5. Pick a slot and choose the app. Tap the slot you want, turn the Digital Crown to scroll to EasyFasting, then select it. Choose a circular or corner slot, since those are the supported families. Press the Digital Crown twice to save.
  6. Add the Smart Stack card. From the watch face, turn the Digital Crown up to open the Smart Stack, scroll to the bottom, and use the edit option to add EasyFasting.

What You Give Up on the Wrist

The watch is a control surface and a glance, not a place to study your data. Being clear about that saves disappointment.

The screen is small. A complication shows a color and a compact value. Even the full watch app is a few controls and a phase name. If you want the story of your week, the phone is where it lives.

No deep stats. History, charts, trends, averages and weight data are phone features. Squinting at a scrolling chart on your wrist is worse than waiting until you sit down.

Phase detail reads better on the phone. The watch tells you which of the six phases you are in. The education cards explaining what the phase means, with evidence-graded wording rather than confident claims about exact timing, are a phone experience. Use the wrist to know where you are and the phone to understand it. If you are still learning the model, start with what happens during a fast.

Battery is a real consideration. A complication that updates through the day, plus an app you open often, uses power. On most modern watches this is not dramatic, but if you already end the day close to empty, a live complication is not free. Watch your own numbers rather than trusting anyone’s estimate.

Other Fasting Apps and the Watch

If you are comparing options, do not take a marketing line at face value. Watch support is easy to imply and easy to verify yourself. Apps worth checking include Zero, Fastic, BodyFast and Simple. Rather than trusting a claim about any of them, run these three checks.

Check the App Store listing’s Information section. Scroll to the bottom of the product page. Compatibility lists supported devices, and Apple Watch appears there only when the app ships a watch component. Ten seconds, and it settles the basic question.

Check the Watch app on your iPhone. Open it and scroll to the list of available apps. An app with a watchOS component shows an Install button. If it never appears after the iPhone app is installed, there is no watch app.

Check the face editor. Install the watch app, then long-press your face, tap Edit and swipe to the complications screen. Tap a slot and scroll the list. If the app supports that family, it is there. Missing from a circular slot but present in a rectangular one tells you exactly which families it ships, which is more precise than any store description.

Is Wrist Tracking Worth It?

For most people who fast on a fixed schedule, yes, and the reason is behavioral rather than technical.
